VTT recently unveiled plans for an expanded and revitalized school at the Campaign Kick-Off Event on May 16, 2012.
The design process has been driven by an assessment of VTT’s educational programming needs. The result is a very efficient plan that will transform VTT into:
- A greatly expanded and revitalized learning environment that can support the best practices of 21st century education
- A safe and secure campus where our children can learn and play, and our parents can drop-off, pick-up and park
- A building design that integrates well with the Beth Israel and is very sensitive to cost and to maintaining school operations during construction with as little disruption as possible
There will be rooms for small group meetings, individualized learning and collaboration.
We will have a new kosher kitchen and a dedicated dining hall that will enable us to allow more time for lunch, improve student nutrition and make more time available for educational programming. And when it’s not being used as a dining hall, it will convert into a large flex space for other programming.
We will have a totally refreshed and updated interior throughout the entire building.
And we will have a large, new, safe and secure underground parkade with direct access into the school.
This is a view of the building as it exists today. You see the old wing along Oak Street, the North building along 26th Avenue, and the Wosk Auditorium/gym.
Once the new building is up, the Oak Street wing will house dedicated and purpose-built spaces for arts, music and drama, plus our shul and resource rooms. The North wing will house our Early Years program, primary grade classrooms and administration.
And here’s the new building, which starts one level below grade and rises two levels above grade. The lower level will contain the double gym, kosher kitchen and dedicated dining hall/flex space. Level two houses a large, technology enriched “learning commons”, 12-14 additional classrooms, flex spaces for small group and individualized learning and wide hallways.
And it all connects to the new parkade that will sit partly under our playing field and extend under the current BI lot.
When you put it all together, we’re looking at 42,000 square feet of new construction, 7,400 square feet of totally renovated and reconfigured space, and 41,000 square feet of refreshed and updated space, for a total of 90,400 square feet of educational excellence!
